The Witcher’s Next Chapter: Polaris Moves into Full-Scale Production

Nearly ten years after the release of The Witcher 3, CD Projekt RED has shared an update on the next game in the series, codenamed "Polaris." Along with the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed "Orion," Polaris was previously teased by CDPR. Although both projects are still in the early stages, with little known about their details, they are expected to be years away from release.

In a recent post celebrating the success of Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty DLC, CD Projekt RED confirmed that Polaris has officially moved past pre-production and is now in "full-scale production," signaling a more active phase in its development. The post also revealed that Polaris will be the first installment in "the new Witcher trilogy," signaling a shift away from the previous three Witcher games.

While this update marks an important milestone, there’s still little information on what the game will entail or when it might launch. Despite moving into full-scale production, Polaris still requires significant development, meaning a release is likely several years away, and the game could undergo many changes before it’s officially revealed.

After a long wait since The Witcher 3’s release in 2015, this update gives fans some hope, especially as CD Projekt RED hints at an ambitious new trilogy for the Witcher franchise. The Witcher 3 continues to be regarded as one of the best RPGs of its generation, and fans are hopeful that Polaris will live up to its predecessor’s legacy.

The gap between The Witcher 3 and Polaris is the longest the series has experienced, partly due to CDPR's focus on Cyberpunk 2077. In addition to developing Polaris, the studio is also working on Cyberpunk's Orion, a new IP codenamed Hadar, and two other Witcher games from different studios, including a remake of the first Witcher and a spinoff called Sirius.

While most of CDPR’s projects, including Polaris, appear to be years from release, fans can look forward to future developments. As Polaris enters full-scale production, there is hope that it will avoid the pitfalls that delayed Cyberpunk 2077’s launch.
